Real Piano vs Electronic Keyboard
Every piano teacher will have their own opinion about this question. Some will be very opinionated and others not so much.
These are my thoughts and feelings...
Real Piano
PROS
-
It is real sound, not electronic sound
-
Accurate feel of the keys
-
Full keyboard
-
Has working sustain pedal
-
Does not need electricity to run
-
Can become a beautiful family heirloom
-
The top provides a fun place to decorate.
CONS
-
More expensive than a simple keyboard, although used pianos can often be found
-
Will need to have a place for it
-
Hard to move
-
Will need to be tuned regularly
-
If your pianist decides not to continue, it was an expensive trial.
Electronic Keyboard
PROS
-
Simple Keyboards are inexpensive
-
Headphones can be used
-
The extra sounds are super fun
-
Easy to move
-
Always in tune
-
Perfect to purchase if you are not sure how serious your child is.
CONS
-
The Simple Keyboards do not have a full keyboard. There will come a time when your budding musician will need the full keyboard.
-
If the power is out…no practicing
-
If it does come with a sustain pedal, it usually does not work very well.
In conclusion
If you do not already own a piano and have a child begging to learn, get a keyboard. Try it out. See how serious they are. However, be prepared for the day when you will need to purchase a real piano for your talented musician.
